Rules, Code of Conduct and Media Policy

Con Ops and CFAC for Help During Con:

Con Operations is Califur’s main operations room. If you have a problem while at Califur, Con Ops can assist you with the problem or get you in contact with staff that are able to assist. It is imperative that you contact Con Ops as soon as you have any sort of issue, problem or need. We respond to situations as soon as they happen, and assist attendees with anything they might require. Letting us know about a situation as soon as it occurs helps us to fix the situation right then and there. Situations that are not brought up to con staff till weeks, months or years after they have occurred have a lower chance of being solved due to the time sensitivity of most situations. If we do not know about the problem, we cannot help you solve it.

For less urgent matters, messages may be left with Con Ops to be forwarded to the correct lead staff that can assist you. As with all messages left with Con Ops, please remember to give details of the problem. Providing the: How, when, and where as well as contact information helps us the issue solved quickly. If you need to contact the Califur’s Chairs, you can also do this by leaving a message for them at Con Ops.

CFAC or (CaliFur Animal Control) are our guest liaisons at the convention. They can assist with a variety of convention related needs: crowd control, medical, door monitoring, rule enforcers and general information informants. If you have a situation and one of our CFAC are within the area, you can alert them to the event in question. CFAC will help to take care of the situation, or ask you to come to ConOps or CFAC Control for assistance. Consider CFAC our portable Con Ops.

General Conduct:

Califur’s goal is to enable our attendees to have an amazing and safe experience while at our convention. Attendees are asked to respect the right to have fun, and to conduct themselves in a manner that does not interfere with this convention right. Califur abides by the laws of the state of California, Los Angeles County and the city of Pomona. Please be reminded that any activity which is illegal outside of the convention is still illegal inside the convention. If Califur or property staff is made aware of illegal activity happening within the event grounds, staff will be required to contact local law enforcement.

Any Califur Staff may ask you to stop an activity on property or move the activity to a private room if it is interfering with convention atmosphere or is a safety concern. Repeat offenders may be required to leave the event if they can not comply to the request to keep an activity out of public space.
If you are not eighteen years of age or older (or fail to provide a photo ID with your birthdate at registration), your badge will be marked as a minor, and you will only be allowed admittance to general-audience programming.

Califur, Sheraton and Fairplex property management staff retain the right to deny entry to anyone. You can be asked to leave at any time without warning or particular infraction to these stated rules of conduct.

You may take photos or video in all the common areas and dances, but please be courteous to everyone and ask before you take any pictures or video. Please respect people that do know want to be photographed or videotaped. Dealers are allowed to take pictures of their Den Tables for promotional purposes. Please speak with Glen the Dealer Den lead before doing so.

Please be aware of the policy found on the back of every Califur badge:

THIS BADGE IS NON-TRANSFERABLE. The holder of this badge agrees to follow the Califur Rules of Conduct. This badge constitutes an agreement to allow Califur the right to use your image and/or likenesses in media devised for advertising and/or other promotional purposes. The holder of this badge further agrees to not utilize recording devices where posted or announced as prohibited and agrees that any permitted recordings will not be used for any commercial purposes without prior written consent of Califur.

Califur retains the right to use any media created on property at the time of the convention for commercial purposes to promote Califur.

Hotel(s) and Fairplex Property:

As a property guest, you are a guest of the convention/ Hotel/Fairplex and must abide by the hotel’s rules and policies whenever you are on the premises. If you are expelled from the hotel for violation of their rules, you immediately forfeit your event membership.

If any member of Califur is found jumping on elevators, trying to set off sensors, or pulling fire alarms they will be responsible for all fees and fines associated with these activities. The offending individual will have their badge pulled and be asked to leave and/or be escorted off hotel property by law enforcement.

The event space and public spaces within the hotel are not sleeping areas. This includes hallways, the lobby, the stairwells and public restrooms. Sleeping is for hotel rooms only.

The con rate for a hotel room is for up to four people only. If you are found with more than four people staying in a room, the hotel reserves the right to charge more for that hotel room.
Pomona municipal code disallows loitering in parking lots and on the Fairplex/hotel property entrances. (This pertains to individuals that are not registered guests of the hotel(s) or Califur.) Individuals that are not a part of the convention that are loitering can be charged with a misdemeanor. (Sec. 34-155 and Sec. 34-156 of Pomona Municipal Code.)

Costumes, Clothing and Behavior in Attire:

Costumes and clothing come in all shapes and sizes. When it comes to attire in con space, we are very minimalistic when it comes to rules of dress.

Please be aware that public exposure of the genital regions, or touching the genital regions in public is a misdemeanor in public space in the city of Pomona. (Sec. 34-221 of Pomona Municipal Code) We ask that attendees do not wear clothing that outlines the genital region or any device or covering which is intended to simulate the genital regions in general convention space. As we have attendees of all ages, we do not find this type of dress appropriate around minors. This type of dress will be permissible in 18+ panels/events that allow it (Examples being the BDSM 101 panel , Cabaret and TAIL! due to the nature of dress for the panel/event.) but the attendee/entertainer wearing such attire must have it covered while walking through general space to and from the panel/event.

Harassment and Assault:

Harassment is defined as any behavior that intentionally annoys or alarms another person. This includes but is not limited to: verbal harassment, making any unwanted physical contact, following someone around a public area (stalking), or threatening to physically harm someone. Please remember that if you approach someone and they tell you “no” or “stop” leave them alone and walk away.

If you do not leave them alone as they have requested, your actions may be grounds for a removal from the convention and/or having the situation dealt with by local law enforcement. If you feel that you are being harassed, or you have been assaulted, please report the matter immediately to Con Ops, Hotel or any convention CFAC member.

Bans:

Califur is not a convention that bans without reason. Most individuals that do receive a ban are banned for the duration of one year unless stated otherwise by the Convention Chairs. If you have been ejected from the convention or have received a ban in the past and are unsure of your status, we ask that you contact the Chairs for further clarification.

Califur will temporarily ban individuals if needed, but it a very rare occurrence. Permanent bans are even rarer.

Restraining Orders:

Please be aware that if you have an issue with someone that might also be in attendance at the convention and have legal documentation, it needs to be addressed to our staff before the convention or as soon as you arrive. This helps us deal with this quickly, so that there is limited conflict. We abide by California state law in these cases and ask one of the parties to leave the premises. If this does not occur, we do contact local law enforcement.

Discrimination:

Discrimination (based on, but not limited to: gender, race, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical/mental disability) is not tolerated by Califur and will be subject to ejection from the convention. Everyone has a right to have fun and enjoy themselves without harassment.

Blades/Swords/Knives, Water Guns & Silly String, California’s Replica Weapon Policy for Imitation Firearms and Concealed Carry Permits:

Knives, Sword, Blades and Pocket Knives: Blade weapons such as daggers and swords (live steel and replica) are acceptable provided they have been peace bonded to the point they obviously cannot be drawn. Please keep in mind that Los Angeles County prohibits the open carrying of blades. Outside of the convention property, these props are illegal to display on your person. (Ord. 11915 § 2, 1979.) (Ord. 11915 § 3, 1979.) So if you are leaving the property, PLEASE remove them from your person before entering public spaces. Blade weapons will need to be checked in with CFAC and hotel security for approval before you may carry it. In some cases, certain blades will not be permissible to carry and you may be asked to remove them from the property.

Pocket knives are allowed. Switch blades must be under two inches in length to be carried. Do not brandish them or use them improperly, or they will be viewed as a weapon and confiscated by CFAC or property staff. They are being allowed because they are useful as tools, please treat them as such.

Water Guns and Silly String: Water guns of any sort and Silly String are NOT ACCEPTABLE, even when obviously not real weapons due to the potential for damage to hotel property.

Imitation Firearm (for costuming purposes): If an imitation firearm is part of a costume, it will need checked in with CFAC and hotel security for approval before you may carry it.

California SB 199 requires that imitation firearms have their entire exterior surface painted a bright color, or to feature florescent strips in salient parts of the gun to make them easily distinguishable.

“Imitation firearm” means any: toy gun, replica of a firearm, or other device that is so substantially similar in coloration and overall appearance to an existing firearm as to lead a reasonable person to perceive that the device is a firearm.

All real guns (including reenactment firearms and antique firearms) or tazers are not allowed on property, in convention space or in any of the hotels.

Concealed Carry Permits: Be advised that California law does not recognize out of state carry permits. If you have an out of state CCP, your CCP is not valid within our state and there for you cannot carry.

If you have a California Concealed Carry Permit, you may only carry if you have written permission for the convention Chairwoman. There are some cases where we may allow a CCP on site (Example: Law enforcement, active military or individuals that prove that it is an extreme necessity to carry.)

If you do not have written permission, you are requested to not bringing your firearm on the private property of the Fairplex, Hotel(s), convention center space or within the footprint of the Fairplex. If you are found to be holding a firearm and do not have written permission to do so, you will be ejected/banned from the convention space and turned over to local law enforcement for failing to comply with the request to disarm on private property and brandishing a weapon.

Parties, Alcohol, Illegal Drugs & Smoking:

Califur does not tolerate the serving of alcohol to minors. If you are hosting a party where alcohol is being served, it is your responsibility as host to ensure that the age of anyone drinking alcohol is checked. You will also need to designate someone not to drink, so that there is a fully competent person present to deal with any emergencies that might arise. Califur does not tolerate the use of illegal substances of any kind. Federal law lists marijuana as a schedule 1 under the Controlled Substances Act. Please be mindful that California State Law does not supersede Federal Law.

E-Cigs, cigarettes, cigars and/or other smoke able substances will not be allowed inside the hotel function space, hotel rooms or hotel balconies. It also will not be allowed in any Fairplex function space. If you are caught, you will be asked to stop and might be charged a cleaning fee. You will need to smoke tobacco/cloves outside in designated smoking areas.

The violation of the above rules could subject you to the immediate loss of your badge and the convention privileges and referral of the matter to other authorities.
